Vietnam is reopening for tourism in March, adding to the list of Asian countries that are preparing for a return of international travelers following more than two years of border closures and limitations.

Read on below to learn what you will need to visit Vietnam as an approved international visitor.

Vietnam Entry Protocols Starting in March

Under Vietnam's reopening plans, read on for the entry requirements that would apply to tourists traveling to Vietnam starting March 15, 2022.

Proof of Full Vaccination

All international visitors over the age age 12 will be required to show proof of either full vaccination or recent recovery from COVID-19 to be granted entry.

To be considered fully vaccinated, a traveler's final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine must have been administered within 14 days and six months of departure, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

Alternatively, travelers may present valid medical documents that certify recovery from a COVID-19 infection within the previous six months.

Testing & Quarantine Requirements

Travelers over the age of 2 must submit results of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours; alternately, results from a rapid test taken within 24 hours are acceptable. In addition to the pre-departure test, visitors from abroad must take a second rapid test within 24 hours of entry. They will have to quarantine until they receive a negative test result.

Travel Insurance

Additionally, visitors to Vietnam must demonstrate proof of medical or travel insurance. The policy must have a minimum liability of $10,000 to cover any COVID-19-related costs.

Visa Requirements

Though this was valid before the pandemic, Vietnam requires Americans to obtain a visa to travel to the country, available through the Vietnam Embassy in Washington, D.C.. Travelers should be able to apply for a visa in person, by mail, online, or via e-mail.

Getting to Vietnam

On January 1 of this year, Vietnam gradually resumed regular international flights for select travelers, but commercial flights from Vietnam to the United States remain limited.

There are a handful of major carriers currently operating flights between the U.S. and Vietnam (including Japan AirlinesKorean Air and Singapore Airlines), but flight options from the U.S. are limited right now.
