United Brings Back Free Snacks in Economy

We didn’t see this one coming but we are delighted. Who would have thought free snacks would return to economy class? Apparently, United did.

LISTEN: Free snacks? Whoo-hoo!

Free Snacks in Economy Return Feb. 2016

According to United’s press release, free snacks will make a comeback sometime in February 2016 on “thousands of daily flights” in both the U.S. and Canada, plus Latin America.

Now, don’t get too excited here; we’re not talking about giant Milky Ways or economy-sized bags of Cheetos; there are two free snacks to choose from and it doesn’t look like either will blow your diet.

  • Snack #1: Stroopwafel

United Waffle Cookie

United describes this as a “Dutch, caramel-filled waffle that pairs perfectly with coffee or tea” but it looks like a fancy cookie to us. It also sounds delicious. Look for it on flights departing before 9:45 a.m.

  • Snack #2: Packaged Savory Snack

United Snack Mix

United offers a couple of choices for this one: “An Asian-style snack mix of rice crackers, sesame sticks and wasabi peas or a zesty-ranch mix of mini pretzel sticks, Cajun corn sticks and ranch soy nuts.” We’ll take it. These 5 ounce bags will be served on flights departing after 9:45 a.m.

We’ve reached out to United to try and find out why they’re bringing back free snacks and will update with any response. In the meantime – thanks, United! UPDATE: We heard from United’s Karen May who tells us they’re doing this because both customers and employees wanted it. Sometimes, said Ms. May, “it’s the little things that make a big difference.”
