The World's 'Most Social' Airport: Los Angeles International

There have been a lot of airport lists in the news recently, including the world’s busiest (Atlanta, though Beijing is coming on strong); the worst in U.S. (Chicago’s O’Hare); and the very best, according to Conde Nast (Hong Kong).

Now, a new list glorifies the world’s “most social” airport, and the winner is Los Angeles International (which may surprise no one who followed the story of Alec Baldwin’s plane ejection and his subsequent tweets on the topic).

Facebook: More Share from LAX than Any Other Airport

The honor was bestowed not by Twitter, but by its older cousin Facebook (the latter was launched in 2004, while consumers didn’t begin tweeting until 2006).

According to Facebook, more people “share” that they are at LAX than any other airport in the world. Unfortunately, the social media giant provides no explanation for this, but certainly the number of celebrities that call Southern California home has something to do with it. And if these folks aren’t personally getting their names out there via social media, you know a PR person is getting paid to do it for them.

Facebook’s Top 10 Most Social Airports

Interestingly, Australia had the lone non-U.S. airport on the list of the world’s 10 most social airports. Another surprise: no New York airport made the top ten, although JFK did come in at number 15. Here are the big winners:

  1. Los Angeles
  2. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta
  3. Chicago O’Hare
  4. San Francisco
  5. Dallas/Fort Worth
  6. Denver
  7. Sydney
  8. Phoenix Sky Harbor
  9. Las Vegas’ McCarran
  10. Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi
