Frontier Raising Some Bag Fees

Brace yourself. As of May 1, Frontier Airlines will be raising some of its bag fees. But not by much.

Frontier: Bag Fees Rise in May

The Denver-based discount airline is raising some baggage fees from $5 to $10 as of May 1, 2015. Note: Some airlines have very complicated fee schedules in which prices vary depending on where you pay (online, at the airport, etc.) and Frontier is one of those. We will try to make it simple.

Best advice: The earlier you pay the fee, the cheaper it is.

What’s Changing

Carry-on bag fee: If a carry-on exceeds the allowed dimensions of 24×16 x10 inches, the gate check fee rises to $60 for most customers (a $10 increase). However, passengers who purchase the more expensive Classic Plus fares will continue to pay $35.

Note: There is a carry-on fee in addition to any gate-check fee but that remains the same, ranging from free for Classic Plus up to $40 if paid at the airport.

Checked-bag fees: Some of these fees (but not all) will rise by $5, varying by point of purchase.

  • First checked-bag: No charge for Classic Plus customers; others will pay from $20 to $30.
  • Second checked-bag: All passengers pay this fee; as of May 1 it will range $30 to $35.
  • Third checked-bag and more: The price of some third checked-bags will rise from $75 to $80 depending on point of purchase.

By the way, Frontier still allows one small bag for free – but it has to be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you. [Editor’s note: Trust me, it can be done.]
