Five Travel Fantasies that Actually Came True
Do you have an airline travel fantasy? [PG-rated fantasies only, please] If so, you may be heartened to know that sometimes dreams do come true. See the five examples below – and don't miss the video at the very end – especially if you like penguins.
1. Best response to high bag fees
You check your bags at the airport then discover to your horror they're overweight. You grumble but open your wallet to pay the hefty fee. This was not the case for a certain Delta passenger in Seattle. When he learned he'd have to fork over $1,400 in extra charges, he simply dumped his bags. All of them. Then boarded his flight to New York. He was questioned upon arrival, since the dumped luggage wound up shutting down the check-in area for two hours (the bags had yet to be screened) but no arrest was made. Question: How much did he spend replacing his wardrobe?
2. Travel like a rock star
OK, maybe most rock stars use private planes (but you might be surprised how many celebrities travel like the rest of us). So listen to travel guru Johnny Jet who claims he sometimes gets treated like a rock star. His secret: boxes of chocolates he personally delivers to gate agents and flight attendants. As Mr. Jet explained to FareCompare, "Usually I get more attention, free drinks and food. But it's also gotten me upgraded numerous times and once a flight attendant gave me a voucher for 7,000 bonus miles because I offered to switch seats." Rock on, Johnny.
3. Airline with a sense of humor
Sick of brusque flight attendants nagging you to turn off your electronic device? Maybe you should read up on a few airline tweets like Delta's recent ode to one of its new planes (with apologies to Sir Mix-A-Lot):
4. Dancing at 30,000 feet
Maybe flying doesn't make you feel like dancing but it beats sitting in those cramped seats, right? Several Colorado College students learned this when they took to the aisle of their Frontier plane and let loose to the Harlem Shake (and yes, we have the video).
5. Dogs sometimes get their day (and their own seat)
Wish Fido wasn't stuck under a seat or flying in the cargo hold? The fault may lie with you since you're not a celebrity like country singer Dierks Bentley. His dog Jake got his own seat on Southwest (a window seat!). As Southwest explained to FareCompare, an exception was made partly because Bentley is apparently a regular customer and "advocate" of the airline but safety was not compromised: "To stay in accordance with all inflight safety procedures, we made sure that the dog was located in one of the front rows with the extra room to lay on the floor in front of the seat." In case you're wondering, this was no freebie. Jake paid for his ticket like anyone else. Or maybe his owner paid.
By the way, Jake isn't the only creature that's traveled in style. Southwest has also transported penguins – to the seeming delight of all onboard. Take a look:
