The first performance numbers of 2013 have just been released by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, so let's see who's starting out the year right – and wrong.

But is your on-time flight a cheap flight?

Airlines: Best On-Time Arrival Rates

  1. Virgin America – 93%
  2. Hawaiian Airlines – 92.5%
  3. AirTran – 89.5%

Airlines: Worst On-Time Arrival Rates

  1. Frontier – 71.3%
  2. ExpressJet – 71.6%
  3. American Eagle – 75%

Save money: find the cheapest flight by airport or by city

Airlines: Most Canceled Flights

  1. Pinnacle Airlines – 3.9%
  2. Mesa Airlines – 2.9%
  3. ExpressJet – 2.9%

Airlines: Fewest Canceled Flights

  1. Virgin American – 0.0% (the airline actually canceled one flight)
  2. Hawaiian – 0.1%
  3. Frontier – 0.2%

Overall Mishandled Baggage Rate

There were 3.41 reports of missing luggage per 1,000 passengers in January, which was better than the previous month's rate but not quite as good as it was for January  2012.

This list only includes the 29 busiest airports in the U.S.

  • Best on-time arrival rate: Las Vegas
  • Worst on-time arrival rate: Newark
  • Best on-time departure rate: Seattle
  • Worst on-time departure rate: Chicago O'Hare
