Visit Savannah
Savannah, Georgia is a city that is oozing with southern charm. The historical district has cobbled streets, pretty squares, and oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. The architecture is picturesque and the food is hearty. Down by the Savannah River, old cotton warehouses have been converted into atmospheric boutiques, restaurants, and craft stores.
Attractions in Savannah
The National Landmark Historic District is where visitors can walk the old squares and streets of Savannah. Glorious mansions can be toured, and there are museums to visit such as the fascinating Prohibition Museum. The architecture looks like it is straight out of a movie and the live oaks draped with Spanish Moss must be experienced at least once. As the most-haunted place in America, a ghost tour is one to add to the itinerary too.
River Street, running alongside the Savannah River, is perhaps the most bustling area of this old port. Eateries with views of the water, Artisan shops, and lively bars can be found here, as can riverboat cruises and ferries to Hutchinson Island.
Spend some time by the seaside on Tybee Island, just a short 20-minute drive from Downtown Savannah. There is an old lighthouse marking the mouth of the Savannah River, long beaches and great places to eat here. The small island has a casual, relaxed atmosphere which is perfect for relaxing.
Savannah College of Art and Design owns two historic theaters and hosts lectures, performances, and film screenings each year. SCAD also hosts the Sidewalk Arts Festival in downtown Forsyth Park each April and the SCAD Museum of Art is a premier contemporary art museum that features established and emerging international artists through rotating exhibits.
Shopping and Restaurants
Dining - The food is good for the soul in Savannah. Seafood dishes are everywhere, and crab cakes are a particular favourite here. Blackened spices add a little kick to chicken, pork and fish, and the steaks are served juicy, thick and perfectly cooked.
Shopping - There are lots of individual boutique stores selling unique pieces and handmade crafts. Antique stores are aplenty in Savannah, and there are great bargains to be had. A city market is held in the historic district that is well worth a visit as well. For a large mall with all the national chain stores and a couple of department stores, the Savannah Mall is the place to go.
Smart Tip
The summer months are humid in Savannah so the best times to visit are spring and the autumn when it’s still mild. St Patricks Day is one of the biggest events here with a lavish parade and two days of celebrations including food and drinks stalls lining the streets.
Flights to Savannah
Savannah has a major airport, Savannah Hilton Head International Airport that is located 12 miles from downtown. There are regular CAT buses serving the city and beaches from the airport, and there is a choice of well-known car rental companies onsite.
