Visit Melbourne
Melbourne is the second-most populous city in Australia. It is known as the country's cultural (and coffee) hub, as well as one of the sporting capitals of the world. While there are always so many things to do and see, you’ll find a distinctly relaxed atmosphere. There's truly something for everyone in this cosmopolitan city.
Attractions in Melbourne
St Kilda Beach - No trip to Melbourne is complete without a visit to the most famous beach in the city. St Kilda is a great spot for windsurfing, water-skiing, or simply swimming and sunbaking.
National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) - This free, public gallery is Australia’s oldest and most visited. There are always interesting exhibitions and events on at NGV that draw in both tourists and locals.
Queen Victoria Market - This iconic Melbourne landmark is the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere. Special night markets are held here during the summer, and it’s a popular meeting spot on weekends. You’ll find fresh produce and some great souvenirs.
Royal Botanic Gardens - The garden, which was founded in 1846, takes up 38 hectares in the heart of the city. The area is home to over 50,000 plants, including many native Australian species. It’s a beautiful spot to have an afternoon picnic.
Shopping and Restaurants
Shopping - You’ll find an abundance of fantastic shopping destinations in the center of the city. Bourke Street Mall is considered the retail heart of Melbourne and has a bustling atmosphere. You can also head to nearby Melbourne Central and the luxurious Emporium shopping center.
Dining - Melbourne is home to a fusion of cuisines. There are many delicious hole-in-the-wall Japanese and Chinese spots, affordable and healthy burger joints, and fancy Greek restaurants all within the main city center. For great Italian and Middle Eastern food, head to Lygon Street, which runs through the suburbs of Carlton and Brunswick East.
Smart Tip
All trams within the center (known as the Hoddle Grid) are free. You can hop on and hop off anywhere as long as you’re within the free zone, which the announcer will inform you about. While trams are the best way to get around the city, try to avoid them during peak hours (before and after work).
Flights to Melbourne
Melbourne has three passenger airports. The largest and only international airport is Tullamarine (MEL). It’s 22 kilometers from the city, though you can easily hop on a SkyBus shuttle outside the main terminals. Avalon and Essendon airports also operate domestic flights within Australia.
