HIP AND HISTORIC-Savannah, Georgia
This little city of amazing architecture and historic squares is also home to 200 festivals a year-yet they still manage to pull out all the stops for Memorial Day Weekend.-
Check out the patriotic festival on River Street with music, crafts, food and true old-fashioned fun.- Or how about a “ghost tour” with a twist: head to “Haunted Oatland Island” and actually hunt for ghosts! Or everyone’s favorite-the glittering Gaslight Tour of a gracious old Savannah mansion.
There are numerous other walking tours, museums and more-plus, this year, Savannah celebrates the centennial of one of its favorite sons: songwriter Johnny Mercer, who penned the words to “Moon River”, “Days of Wine and Roses” and about 1,700 other songs.-A variety of activities in his honor are going on year-round.
And don’t miss the restaurants of Savannah-yes, there is superb Southern cooking, and, international cuisines of all kinds-but stand back when the locals start arguing over whether “Mrs. Wilkes” or “Elizabeth on 37th” has the better food!
