Best and Worst Month for Airfare Deals (Hint: Same Month)

Let’s cut to the chase: December is arguably the best and worst month for airfare. I’ve got three good ways to help make it a great month for you.

LISTEN: Even more tips in my podcast.

How to Find the Best Airfare Deals in December

1. Fly early

What a difference a couple of weeks makes: Both are round-trip fares for Hartford-Ft. Lauderdale on JetBlue.

  • Dec. 2-5: $223
  • Dec. 23-28: $663

You can find some of the best fares of the year in the first couple of weeks of December. Then prices jump for the holidays on Dec. 17 or 18 (it varies by airline).

2. Fly to Europe

We’ve seen outstanding deals to Europe throughout December because it’s the off-peak season for tourism. Look for especially cheap flights on the low cost international airlines as seen in these examples.

  • Norwegian Air: Oakland-Stockholm from $159 one-way
  • Wow Air: Baltimore-Dublin from $199 one-way

3. Fly the cheapest days of the holidays.

You won’t find great or even good deals during peak periods like Christmas and New Year’s but some fares are better than others. A few examples of better days to fly (more here).

Christmas departures

  • Friday, Dec. 25 (Christmas Day)
  • Tuesday, Dec. 22

Christmas returns

  • Tuesday, Dec. 29
  • Wednesday, Dec. 30
  • Saturday, Dec. 26
