AskRick Q&A: Should I Use My Reward Points For Holiday Travel?

Q: Rick, my family is located all over the country, and we are all trying to fly to Scotland this Christmas. Should I use reward points? How should I buy these tickets and what’s the best way to plan these ticket purchases?

Amanda Maffessanti – Ochos Rios, Jamaica

A: The good news is that Christmas falls within winter rates, which means travel is a little less popular. The danger zone is from December 16-23, so you should try flying before December 16. Here are a couple more tips:

When searching for awards tickets, don’t search for four at once – search one at a time.

Coast to coast tickets are in the $280 range right now, so I would consider buying the tickets outright as opposed to using your rewards.
