    ALASKA

If you have a thirst for adventure, Alaska is waiting for you. Watch grizzlies as they fish for salmon, or hike along a glacier-fed river; take an eco-tour or stay in a luxurious retreat. Alaska has all this and more – and you don’t have to be an experienced outdoorsman to enjoy any of it! You can find the guide to match your skill level everywhere you go in Alaska.

    Journey to Adventure

Some visitors like to get the “lay of the land” with a one-day or multi-day cruise – and Alaska offers several cruise ship choices – plus, the budget-friendly option of the Alaska State Ferry – and all water craft offer the same spectacular scenery.

    Where to Go

The Alaska tourism website likes to divide our 49th state into five distinct regions: the Far North, Interior, Southwest, Southcentral and Interior Passage. The state capital, Juneau, is in the southern-most region – the Interior Passage, while Anchorage is in Southcentral, Fairbanks in the Interior and Nome is in the Far North. Each city has accommodations ranging from rustic to luxurious, as well as fun nightlife that includes lively taverns, great home-cooking and delicious ethnic cuisine.

    What to See

Wildlife lovers will enjoy prime viewing spots all over the state-and numerous tour operators offer special wildlife excursions featuring bears, eagles, moose and mountain goats – as well as opportunities to see puffins, sea lions and whales. Look for tours originating from Juneau and most cities – many tours even provide guarantees that you will see bears – or any other wildlife you hoped to encounter.

Alaska offers incomparable outdoor sport fun, too – try white water rafting, kayaking in crystal waters or hike or bike a mountain trail. If you like to fish (or would like to learn), Alaska has more than three million lakes for fresh washing fishing – not to mention salt water fishing. Would you like to learn how to fly-fish or even ice-fish? Alaska is the place – all you have to do is choose where you want to go.

Getting around Alaska can be its own voyage of discovery – especially if you take the train! You have your choice of the Alaska Railroad and the White Pass & Yukon Route – and note that the Alaska Railroad is famous for its glass-domed railroad cars – the better to take in the spectacular scenic views.

    Food and Fun

You cannot miss a down-home “salmon bake” – this buffet-style feast is a favorite of Alaskans and includes all kinds of mouth-watering side dishes, plus desserts that often feature home-grown berries. Other signature Alaskan dishes feature wild game – and sourdough pancakes. Bring a hearty appetite!
