Best Holiday Tips for Thanksgiving and Christmas

Shopping for cheap airline tickets for a holiday trip can be maddening. Mainly because, such tickets just don't exist! Truly cheap ones don't, anyway. If you read nothing else, in this article, read this:

You probably won't get a great airfare deal during the holidays.

But don't despair - we can help you find the cheapest airfare that's out there. And there will be some "pretty good" airfares, if you know how to look for them. And the following tips will help you do just that.

Don't be a procrastinator.

This has been the year of the "capacity cuts" - and that means fewer seats are available - and this holiday season, the planes will really be packed. If you wait too long, you will lose out -- you won't get a seat.

Caution: Do not expect to find any last minute bargains this year.
Try to get "extra" vacation days, especially during Thanksgiving.

The busiest travel days of any year are the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after the holiday. If you can take all of Thanksgiving week off - plus a couple more days during the week after Thanksgiving, you will save. Or fly on Thanksgiving Day.

Caution: Flying the Tuesday before and Monday after Thanksgiving will also be expensive.
Start Christmas early.

Don't fly the week of Christmas (it's on a Thursday this year) - better to arrive a full week before. Or Christmas Day.

Caution: New Year's can be pricey too, but Dec. 31 isn't too bad.
Going away for the holidays? Avoid sunshine.

Warm weather resort areas will be pricey -- how about Scotland?

Some snow-bound cities - with skiing -- will also be high. But you can find some airfare deals to certain Florida destinations.
If you can find "awards seats" now is the time to use your frequent flier miles.

This would work especially well if you were heading overseas in November, where they don't celebrate Thanksgiving.

Caution: Just a reminder that Canada celebrates Thanksgiving in October.
