According to preliminary figures from Airports Council International for 2014, the world’s busiest airport in terms of overall traffic is the same U.S. airport as the year before: Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson.
Busiest Airports: Surprises
A quick snapshot of some surprises in the Top 20.
- Istanbul: Turkey’s airport had the biggest gains in passenger traffic – up nearly 11% – moving it from 18th to 13th place.
- Dubai: The United Arab Emirates Dubai is now number one in terms of international passenger traffic only.
- China: Three of its cities made the Top 20 including Beijing (#2), Guangzhou (#15) and Shanghai (#19).
- Los Angeles: The West Coast city (#5) has now moved ahead of Chicago (#7)
