Airlines slogans come and go, changing with times and taste (remember, “I’m Cheryl, fly me“? Blame that on long-defunct National Airlines). But sometimes you have a winner, worth pulling out of mothballs again and again (see the video below).
United’s Friendly Skies
Take one part Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” toss in a voice-over by Matt Damon, add a tried and true slogan like “Fly the Friendly Skies” and most agree you have a winner. Certainly United does, as they have resurrected this new/old campaign once again. But is it the best ever?
Best Airline Slogans
While friendly skies has proven popular – not to mention, long-lived (it was first used in the 1960s) – is it the best airline slogan ever? A few contenders for the crown which include new and old carriers (and we’d love to hear your picks):
- American: “Doing What We Do Best” Well, this hasn’t been the best year for the airline’s doings, what with bankruptcy and a merger in limbo.
- Braniff: “When You’ve Got It, Flaunt It” They did flaunt it – but to no avail. The airline went out of business in 1982.
- Pan Am: “Live Today. Tomorrow Will Cost More” A somewhat terrifying slogan, even if true. A more fun one: “Yes, Pan Am stewardesses were required to wear girdles“.
- Southwest: “Bags Fly Free” We may have a winner – assuming bags continue to fly free.
Question: What’s your favorite airline slogan?
