Top 5 Cities for Celebrating Mexican Food and Culture on Cinco de Mayo

Just as you don’t have to be Irish to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo is becoming a celebration for everyone – everyone who enjoys great Mexico food, music and festivals, that is.

CheapOair has come up with a list of recommended destinations for enjoying the holiday’s 2012 celebrations, and as luck would have it, most of these tourist favorites are relative airfare bargains.

The city’s Douglas Park hosts a colorful three-day Cinco de Mayo celebration (May 4-6) featuring local and international musicians. It all kicks off with a big parade and visitors will be able to  find special deals on food and drink at Mexican restaurants throughout the city.

Sure, Las Vegas is a happening place, but CheapOair commends this Nevada town for really knowing how to party. Take in the two-day festival at Reno’s Grand Sierra Resort & Casino (May 5-6) and the celebration in nearby Sparks, both featuring live entertainment, lots of food, events for the kids and even car shows.

The city gets a jump-start on other celebrations with Fiesta San Antonio! which runs Apr. 19-29. See Market Square and other venues come alive with music, dancing and 100 different events.

Celebrations begin with Fiesta Broadway on Apr. 29 which is billed at the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the world (and should be since they block off more than 20 downtown city blocks for this event). Other parties will take place around City Hall, Olvera Street, the Los Angeles Historical Museum and the city’s popular Mexican restaurants.

Another huge celebration. This weekend-long Colorado event (May 5-6) includes live mariachi bands, salsa dancers, a green chili bowl cook-off and a parade.
