Spirit Continues Expansion with Service from San Diego

At a time when many airlines have adopted the business model of the “C’s” – as in, capacity cuts and consolidation – discounter Spirit Airlines keeps right on expanding.

Could You Pay $100 a Bag on Spirit? Yes.

New Flights to Portland, Los Cabos

Its latest move: Daily non-stop service between San Diego and Portland, Ore., and between San Diego and Los Cabos in Mexico.

Back in April, the Florida-based carrier announced new routes to Toluca, Mexico – which is just outside Mexico City – and in July it began new domestic service between Dallas and a host of U.S. cities including Los Angeles and Oakland. The airline already flies to more than 50 destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean and Latin America.

Spirit: Crazy Little Airline that Breaks All the Rules

Spirit’s Many Fees

Love Spirit or hate it – and there are plenty on both sides – the spartan airline keeps making money. Although it often touts ultra-low fares (Spirit was once famous for its $9 airline tickets), a big source of its revenue comes from fees – Spirit charges for everything from soft drinks, coffee and water to carry-on bags. In fact, for most passengers on Spirit, a checked-suitcase is actually cheaper than toting your own bag on the plane.
