Florida-based Spirit Airlines continues to challenge Southwest on its home turf of Texas: the low-cost carrier just announced new non-stop flights to five more cities from Dallas-Fort Worth International (DFW). The new destinations include Baltimore, Houston, Oakland and Los Angeles plus Spirit has filed to begin service to Cancun.
Spirit Adds Total of 20 Cities from DFW
Spirit, which only began service to Dallas a year ago, now flies from the Texas city to 20 destinations. In June, the carrier announced it added DFW flights to two West Coast cities plus Detroit and suburban Mexico City.
New Routes Begin in September, April
New routes are scheduled to begin in the fall as noted:
- DFW and Baltimore: Daily non-stop service begins Sept. 6
- DFW and Houston: Twice-daily non-stop service begins Sept. 20
- DFW and Los Angeles: Daily non-stop service begins Apr. 25, 2013
- DFW and Oakland: Daily non-stop service begins Apr. 25, 2013
Cancun service will be announced depending on government approval of the new route.
‘Insanely’ Low Fares?
Surprisingly, Spirit did not accompany its announcement with an airfare sale, though it did remind readers of its press release that the self-styled ultra low-cost carrier is famous for its “insanely low fares.”
