An airline is only as big as the number of people it carries – so which airlines fly the most passengers?
Southwest Tops in Domestic Traffic
According to the latest statistics from the Department of Transportation covering the month of August, Southwest won top honors for domestic travelers. As the Texas-based carrier’s acquisition of AirTran nears completion, the two airlines report passenger figures jointly, but even on its own, Southwest would have led the pack. Delta was in second place followed by United, American and US Airways.
United Tops in International Traffic
United came out on top for international passengers in August followed by Delta, American and US Airways. Southwest does not fly outside the U.S., but the Caribbean and Mexican destinations served by its partner AirTran were enough to vault it into seventh place on the list.
The busiest U.S. airport for domestic traffic was, as usual, Atlanta – for August and the year so far. JFK topped the list for international traffic in August, but the year-to-date international traffic crown was won by Miami.
