Southwest: New Routes Launched as Total Integration with AirTran Nears

Has it really been four years since Southwest announced its acquisition of AirTran? It has indeed yet travelers still see AirTran’s lower case “a” on planes – though not for long. Here’s the latest on the merger news. Do not skip the last paragraph.

Southwest’s New Flights to/from Dallas

Over the weekend, Southwest launched the following non-stop flight routes. All are to or from Dallas (Love Field):

  • Atlanta
  • Ft. Lauderdale
  • Nashville
  • New York (LaGuardia)
  • Phoenix
  • Orange County/Santa Ana, Calif.
  • San Diego
  • Tampa

More are coming. Starting Jan. 6, look for new non-stops out of Dallas to/from San Francisco and Oakland.

Southwest-branded International Flights

The airline has also begun Southwest-branded flights to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and Mexico City which had previously been flown under the AirTran brand, but no more.  As Southwest put it in a recent press release, “All international flights between seven destinations outside the United States and the carrier?s nine U.S. gateway cities are now flown by Southwest.” Now you know.

Cheapest Flights – Why You Must Compare

As FareCompare’s Rick Seaney has pointed out before, no single airline always has the cheapest fares. Sometimes it will be Southwest. Sometimes it will be another airline. You won’t be sure of getting the best fares unless you compare prices, and we have a great idea on the best way to do that.
