Southwest 40th Anniversary Sale Drops Summer/Fall Airfare "Like a Stone"

Southwest Anniversary Sale

A new 40th anniversary sale from Southwest Airlines is now underway featuring fares as low as $40+ each-way.

As FareCompare CEO Rick Seaney noted on Twitter, the “sale is going to drop late summer/fall tix like a stone today.” The fact that this sale has launched on a Tuesday is no surprise to Rick; in fact, that’s the basis for FareCompare’s best known travel tip.

Shop for Airfare on Tuesdays at 3pm

Southwest and other airlines frequently launch sales on late Monday or early Tuesday; the other airlines with competing routes then jump in to match those prices, a matching process that is complete by the afternoon, which is why FareCompare always says, the best day to shop for airfare is Tuesday at 3pm eastern time. It’s when airfare shoppers will find the most airlines with the most deals.

But what has always set the airline apart is its combination of discounted pricing and the longtime Southwest baggage policy of two free checked-bags per passenger.

Now, the little airline that turned into a behemoth (in part because of the recent acquisition of AirTran) is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a new three-tiered airfare sale. Here are the details.

New Southwest Airfare Sale
