Not Your Average Travel Stories + Video: Week of June 23, 2014

This week: Good airline slogans, awful airline slogans. Plus flight attendant mentions his Speedo (!) in fun video.

LISTEN: FareCompare’s Alex Williams and Anne McDermott provide sizzling commentary.

Strange, Weird or Just Plain Odd

Good news, bad news for Georgia gun owners: If you have a “concealed carry” license and have a gun on you while trying to go through airport security, starting July 1 you will not be arrested. However, according to news reports, you will need to wait while the permit is verified and could face a civil penalty of up to $11,000 but the real big deal is all this might make you miss your flight.

Robot valet parking: That’s what they’re calling it at Germany’s Dusseldorf Airport but sadly, a robot does not drive your car off to a parking lot. It’s more like a fancy forklift thing.  On the other hand, a robot won’t have his hand out for a tip, either.

Southwest bomb threat: A 26 year old man reportedly wanted to get back at his girlfriend for breaking up with him so on June 18 he claimed there was a bomb on her Southwest plane. This of course caused a delay for the Seattle-Vegas flight but he was eventually arrested after police traced the alleged threat to his grandmother’s phone. Prosecutors say the guy has a long history of threatening people.

Cocaine charges: A Miami area woman was arrested for cocaine trafficking. She happens to be a TSA agent but according to news reports this appears to have been a leisure activity (allegedly) and not something pursued during work hours. Nevertheless, the TSA is in the “process of terminating her employment.”

Headline of the day: From Smithsonian – “If You’ve Never Missed a Flight, You’re Probably Wasting Your Time.” The magazine explains this theory in great detail using mathematical terms (oh, dear). Agree, disagree? [Not having ever missed a flight, I don’t agree but then I like to get where I’m going]

Delta’s new slogan: According to a news report, the airline has filed for trademark protection for what may be its new motto, “The World’s Most Trusted Airline.” As far as airline slogans go, it’s not quite as good as Braniff’s “When you’ve got it, flaunt it” or Continental’s cheesy “We really move our tail for you” but on the other hand, where are those guys today?

Yet another fee increase: Consumers and airlines alike are verbally opposing the increase to the TSA fee from $2.50 to $5.60.

New routes for JetBlue: The East Coast carrier will add 5 new routes from Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA), with destinations including Fort Meyers and West Palm Beach, Florida; Charleston, S.C.; Hartford, Conn.; and Nassau  in the Bahamas.

New routes for American: American Airlines has added 4 new routes from Los Angeles (LAX), with stops to San Antonio, Texas; Tampa, Florida; Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

One little letter: It made all the difference when booking flights for this gentlemen who ended up on the wrong continent.

Travelin’ tunes: CNN picks the 15 best travel songs of all time. And by all time, they mean everything from the 1950s to the 1970s. Oof. [FareCompare’s personal guilty pleasure from the list: Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page” from 1973]

Job you couldn’t pay me $1 million to do: This. I would never do this.

Video: A Southwest Airlines flight attendant’s safety speech had us rolling in the aisle.
