Need another sign o’ the times? Frontier airlines dropped its toll-free customer service number last month, according to the Denver Post. Now if you want help you’re obliged to call a Salt Lake City number – 801-401-9000 – which will cost you if you use a landline.
Why Frontier Dropped Toll-Free Calls
Frontier isn’t alone. As USA Today points out, Allegiant and Spirit also dropped their toll free lines and did it some time ago. There are two reasons for this:
- Usage: Most people use cell phones to call airlines and such calls are usually free anyway.
- Money: Let’s call this reason number one; dropping toll-free lines saves airlines tons of money.
How much? A Frontier spokesman told the Post it’ll save $1.9 million a year and added that they are “passing along the savings directly to our customers” though no specific examples were cited. We will take a guess that the savings falls under a general category of “keeping fares low”.
Don’t Call for Reservations
Reminder: No matter what phone you use or what airline you call, avoid making reservations by phone! Most airlines charge a fee for this – up to $35. Next time you want cheap flights, go online instead.
