Yes, Virginia, there will be higher baggage fees at Christmastime on Spirit Airlines, but there is some good news too.
Spirit: Bag Fees Rising
What you need to know if you’ll fly Spirit during the December holidays.
- When: Bag fee hikes will apply to travel from Dec. 16 to Jan. 4
- Which bags: First checked-bag fees will rise $2 (each way) for standard-sized luggage. Spirit also charges a baggage fee for carry-on bags but those will remain unchanged.
- Exemptions: Travelers in Spirit’s $9 Fare Club (annual membership fee: $49.99) will still pay the special members-only fees, but they are not being hiked for the holidays.
A spokesman for the airline told FareCompare that Christmas and New Year’s “is a very high demand period for Spirit.” In other words, it’s an excellent opportunity to add to the bottom line, but to be clear, Spirit is not alone in this. Just last month, Frontier Airlines also raised baggage fees and the Denver-based carrier hiked them for both Christmas and Thanksgiving.
