In what may be a last hurrah before the higher-priced summer airfare season really kicks in, several airlines are offering last-minute deals and specials in varying price ranges that are good for travel during the Memorial Day holiday period.

The Deals Blog – Updated Daily

Memorial Day – A Slightly Cheaper Holiday

Normally, flying during any holiday season means passengers pay a premium – unless flying on the holiday itself such as Thanksgiving Day – but some of these deals break that rule, or at least bend it a little.

American got things rolling with a now-expired sale last week, but three other carriers have stepped up with new Memorial Day weekend offerings which are still available to shoppers. Click on the airline name to see further details:

Airlines with Memorial Day Weekend Airfare Sales

    • Frontier: Holiday deals start at just $54 each-way, but at these prices they may go very quickly
    • US Airways: Special fares start at just under $100 each-way to/from a limited number of cities
    • Virgin America: Memorial Day sale on First Class and Business Class

    Summer Vacation Shopping Tips

Travelers planning to fly later in the season will still find plenty of early summer deals that may meet longer-range vacation needs, including a recent and still-ongoing sale from JetBlue which featuring a couple of flights for as little as $47 each-way. However, as airfare analyst Rick Seaney notes, most such sales offer the very cheapest fares for travel on Tuesdays or Wednesdays only and JetBlue is no exception. Seaney adds, “You’ll start seeing better deals later on in August.”

Look for Best of Not-So-Great Deals

Earlier this year, Seaney said don’t expect last-minute steals this summer and so far he’s been proven right. However, there may be a few decent-but-not-spectacular deals here and there for those who just have get away on an unplanned jaunt and the latest Memorial Day sales are proof of that.
