When you vacation in California you are actually visiting several unique "worlds" each with superb attractions and glorious scenery.
Take your pick from the beach culture of Southern California the wine country of Sonoma the cosmopolitan San Francisco scene or the apricot orchards and almond groves of Fresno. Or see them all!
Some call California the tourism capital of the world because it has it all: action, adventure and fun. Plus, there are plenty of opportunities to simply relax.
For natural wonders, it's hard to beat the eerie beauty of Mono Lake in north, and the lovely rolling hills above Malibu near Los Angeles. Truly, California is a land of contrasts: Mt. Whitney in the Sierra Nevada range is the tallest peak in the lower 48 while just 200 miles to the southeast is the lowest spot in the U.S. Death Valley (where temperatures can soar above 130 F ).
Tourists and locals flock to man-made attractions like these perennial favorites: Disneyland in Orange County; Universal City Walk in Los Angeles; Long Beach's famed Aquarium of the Pacific; and of course, San Francisco's Ghirardelli Square.
Art lovers will thrill to California's eclectic collections (and here is just a sampling): The Getty in West Los Angeles features a wide array of masterpieces including numerous impressionist paintings; its sister site, the Getty Villa in Malibu, specializes in ancient antiquities (and each Getty boasts free admission). For something a bit more down-and-dirty, there's the wonderful Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits where the Los Angeles Times notes you can see about a million bones many from saber-toothed cats and mammoths that met their doom in these pits during the ice age.
If nature is what you seek, you won't be disappointed. Northern California is home to Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks and one of the nation's newer national parks is just off the coast of Ventura County in Southern California the Channel Islands a nesting place for bald eagles, a playground for the sea lions.
Looking for something a little different? Head to Pasadena, just northeast of Los Angeles to see the stately 100-year old mansions, built for the millionaires like chewing gum magnate William Wrigley and the co-founder of Procter & Gamble. Then head to the famous Rose Bowl not for the football, but for the incomparable flea market (antique jewelry, vintage clothing, one-of-a-kind collectibles and much, much more).
And don't forget to visit Sacramento: you may catch a glimpse of the resident movie star, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and tour Old Sacramento and explore historic theaters and shops dating back to the Gold Rush days.
