The City of Atlanta is home to people who like to do things: they work hard (Atlanta ranks 5th among cities who play host to Fortune 500 companies) - and they play hard. They take great pride in their city - and delight in showing it off.
That's why Atlanta is such a tourism vacation magnet - its lively people - and its huge array of fun things to do.
Must-see tourist attractions? Too many to name, but here's a partial list: The King Center, the burial place of the great civil rights leader; the Carter Library, where you might catch a glimpse of our 39th president; and the CNN Studios - where you can tour the sprawling newscenter and maybe see a famous face or two.
On the lighter side, check out the World of Coke - the best part? Watching the actual bottling process. Or visit the Georgia Aquarium and see angry piranha - and happy little otters! Maybe you like farmer's markets - if so, you'll fall in love with Dekalb's - it features great produce, of course, but it also showcases freshly ground spices, cheeses, chutneys, amazing kitchen gadgets and more.
By now, you've probably worked up an appetite - well, you're in luck - because Atlantans love to entertain, and entertainment means food!
What's your pleasure? In this city, restaurants feature everything from Southern Barbeque (a current favorite is Pig-N-Chik) to the latest in haute cuisine. But you must not miss the Varsity, an Atlanta fixture for more than 80 years. Walk in, and someone will automatically shout, "What'll ya have?" The correct answer: a chili cheese dog, of course.
Looking for something more upscale? Then you want Bone's - and don't be alarmed by the name - the Atlanta Constitution-Journal says this lovely steak and seafood emporium is the "the best place to impress a date" (and don't miss the grit fritters).
When you're done wandering, there are plenty of stylish hotels - from downtown to Buckhead - all featuring that "SoCo" vibe (Southern Cosmopolitan). Try the sleekly hip Ellis Hotel (and sip on one of their signature Mint Julep Martinis) - or the lushly opulent Mansion on Peachtree.
And speaking of Peachtree - Atlanta is loaded with them! Peachtree Street, Peachtree Road, Peachtree Lane and more. Just remember that while folks in Atlanta are gracious and helpful to strangers, they tend to begin all directions by saying, "You go down Peachtree..." Just be sure to ask which Peachtree they're talking about!
