Q: Rick, what is the best time of year to buy a “round the world” ticket, and are they still limitless for up to 18 months? I haven’t heard anyone discuss them in the past two years. Any insight is appreciated.

Where to go: 80 Trips Around the World

A: When it comes to around-the-world travel, it’s all about flexibility. If you know when you’re going to leave and how much time you plan on spending in each location, it’s cheaper to book each flight separately. But if you want take your time and spend 10 days here and 15 days there and make up your schedule as you go, expect to pay a little more.

Typically, you have to start and end in the same country, and sometimes the same city.

With current fuel prices, it will cost about $1,000 to cross the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, so keep that in mind as an initial cost.

Don’t forget your papers: You may run into passport and visa issues along the way, so make sure everything is up to date before leaving.
