Statistician/Decision Scientist – Best Time To Buy

This position will be strongly focused on deriving algorithms that identify the relationships between various forces that influence price-setting in the airline industry.  The Statistician / Decision Scientist will build a predictive model that interprets years of historical trends and millions of data points across disparate environments and structures, including published airfares, jet fuel pricing, energy futures, economic data, airline capacity and schedules, airline competitive dynamics on a route-by-route basis, seat inventory management, and many other factors.  This individual will create a framework by which our developers can build data-driven tools that help consumers make better, more informed decisions about how and when to shop for and purchase airfare. This position will also serve as an analytical and reporting consultant, supporting marketing, product, and core business initiatives end-to-end.

The candidate will help lead internal clients and teams in the development and continued refinement of business programs and solutions based on advanced analytical tools and techniques. The successful candidate must be able to develop real world business programs from highly advanced modeling and statistical tools and behavioral predictive models. This role also has responsibility to identify, scope, propose, and provide reporting and insight in support of new and existing products and product features.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Strong quantitative background (preferred advanced degree in Statistics, Social Science Research, Mathematics, Econometrics, Operations Research, or Quantitative Marketing)
  • 5+ years experience in algorithm development, statistical analysis, data mining, predictive modeling or a comparable role while working in a large scale data environment
  • Intimate understanding of airline revenue management, QSI modeling, and/or O&D pricing would be ideal
  • Prior work experience in modeling derivatives, commodity futures, and/or energy/fuel price changes a strong plus
  • Strong proven analytical skills with solid foundation in statistical techniques, including multiple regression analysis, logistic regression analysis, cluster analysis, using tools such as SAS and/or R
  • Experience in integrating heterogeneous data sets into an enterprise data warehouse, with the ability to define optimal performance requirements and specifications of the supporting I.T. infrastructure
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of SQL (preferably MySQL) and SQL data management activities, including working with large, disparate datasets across multiple environments
  • Ability to communicate complicated analytical solutions clearly to non-analytic individuals one-to-one, in presentations and over email
  • Proven ability to apply analytic findings to clear impactful business actions
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, open environment with limited structure
  • High data peripheral vision or an ability to discover high impact insights in areas, shapes, and forms that may differ from original task at hand
  • Experience in conducting or managing third-party web analytics (Google Analytics, SiteCatalyst, Omniture, etc.) a strong plus

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Create predictive algorithms and test their efficacy using historical data points
  • Recommend, design, and implement appropriate data modeling and statistical techniques that drive new consumer products and improve the user experience for comparison shopping and purchasing airfare
  • Maintain and adjust the predictive model and its meta data based on new market dynamics
  • Identify, scope, propose, and provide reporting and insight in support of new and existing products and product features
  • Create and develop the data capture requirements, analytical plans, and reporting methods to improve the effectiveness of marketing and product initiatives
  • Actively support acquisition marketing and product testing initiatives end-to-end
  • Develop and maintain user friendly dashboards that monitor the state of the business
  • Recommend improvements to data and analytics tools, platforms, and processes
  • Provide ad-hoc analysis and decision support as needed, including sources such as MySQL, Google Analytics, and other internal and third-party platforms
