Avoid Surcharges, Find the Best Deals

Like mosquitos at a picnic, this summer has unwelcome airline ticket surcharges for domestic travel. FareCompare CEO, Rick Seaney, talked with USA TODAY and analyzed how this charge will affect travelers this summer. See what days you should avoid when you fly this summer and save up to $30 per ticket.

You can also save on U.S. summer airfare if you know about "hub buster" airline sales; we show you how you can sometimes save hundreds of dollars on airfare by taking a connecting flight as opposed to nonstops.

Attention European travelers: British Airways is in the midst of a series of strikes and we have contact information for the airline as well as dates for the next two scheduled strikes. Don't have a reservation for Europe, but want to go this summer? We've got the best available deals to Europe but don't delay much longer - prices typically rise in mid-June.

If you want to be a smart shopper, learn how airfare hikes really work - and how to avoid them. And don't pass up the chance to review our top ten tips to minimize summer airfare prices.

    A Note from Rick
Fight Back Against Summer Airfare Hikes

This is not an especially cheap summer to fly, but I've put together a list of top ten tips that can help you find the cheapest airfare available.

Number one: Be flexible on your travel dates. People like to start vacations on Fridays and end them on Sundays, but these are expensive days to fly; instead, travel on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday.

Another good tip: Avoid shopping for plane tickets on the weekends; cheaper airfares are available on Tuesday afternoons.

Finally, if you see a great price, grab it - the cheapest tickets will not last. I've got a lot more tips to save on summer airfare, and that's my goal: to save you money every time you shop for airfare.
